The
Forest Inventory
The forest inventory is the base for all
of the decisions that will be made in
regards to managing your woods.
The inventory is simply going into the
woods and scientifically taking
measurements of trees and making observations
of the area. Accuracy and
experience are both key elements in an
accurate inventory that gives the
forester what he/she needs to make land
management decisions.
For
example, what would the difference be if
your forester recorded 2 saplings as 2"
trees, when they were actually 4" trees? The
difference would be 138 trees per acre.
This will make a difference on which
silvilcultural methods we would
prescribe.
When Long Forestry
conducts an inventory we use topographic
and aerial maps that
we make on our GIS mapping software.
This allows us to randomly place
inventory plots to insure an accurate
and unbiased inventory.
It
is also important to include only the
trees that need to be counted, based on
the scientific methods. Long Forestry
encourages the use of limiting
distances. Some foresters include every
other "boarder line tree," which again
results in inaccurate data and can cause
improper management decisions. We
prefer to record every tree that is on
plot and will measure every "boarder
tree" to to make sure the
inventory is accurate. Why?
Because forestry is practiced in
many stages over a trees life and
results at the end of each project
matter. The information collected
during an inventory will determine many
management decisions that occur in those
woods for many years to come. |

There is no doubt that when Long
Forestry does an inventory that the data
collected is accurate and unbiased.
We have the tools, experience and ethics
to manage forest lands correctly....because
results matter. |
