Grouse Habitat Restoration
TSI and Tree Planting
Lansing, Iowa |
Long Forestry was awarded a 38 acre contract
in the north east corner of Iowa near
Lansing. The project includes TSI,
tree planting, and herbicide application.
Last March Long Forestry traveled to Lansing
Iowa, up in the north east corner of the
state, to complete a 38 acre TSI.
The project
involved habitat restoration with the goal
of creating an early successional habitat,
which is important for the shrinking grouse
population. The process involved the
areas to be clear cut of all merchantable
timber, followed by a TSI which would drop
the remaining standing trees.
Afterwards the plots would be left alone to
re-grow on its own, creating a dense area of
young growth, ideal for grouse. A
portion of the areas will also be replanted
with red oak trees, complete with tree
shelters and herbicide application.
Long Forestry plans to return in May to
plant the 900 trees. |
Above is a picture of the clear cut we came
to finish off. To our surprise there
were many merchantable trees left standing.
The tree on the left of the picture is one
of many 14" black walnuts we cut down.
The rest of the stand is mostly undesirable
trees, elm and maple, many above
merchantable size.

Above you see a completed 10 acre unit.
The trees left standing were girdled to
create or preserve animal habitat. We will return in May to
plant 900 trees on half of the TSI, while
leaving the other half to re-grow naturally
for the grouse population. |
