Mystic Hills Common Stand Exam Black Hills
National Forest |
Long Forestry was awarded a
common stand exam inventory contract for the
USFS in the Black Hills National Forest.
We traveled there this July and worked the
contract until August. Our results were
great, with zero failed inspections and we finished
ahead of schedule. Long Forestry
employees, Eric Sumner and Margaret Anderson
were on the team and did a great job.
Below are some pictures from the project. |

Mike works the plot. Here he is taking
measurements from plot center, and counting
regeneration. |
Chris prepares
the gear at the bottom of the hill. Later the
dogs, Bougs and Some, take a break at the top of
the hill. |

Mike takes a
core sample from a Ponderosa Pine to count its
age and growth rate. He is using an increment
borer on the left to remove the sample, he is
counting it on the right. |

Our natural landscapes involve fire to maintain,
change, and restore the balances of nature.
On the left, this fire burned many acres but it
got hotter in this area and caused tree
mortality. This event creates additional
diversity in this area, providing habitat for
different life forms. |
Mike and Eric are working the plot. They each
are coring a site tree on the right. |
