Sand Ridge Prairie Prescribed Burn
Long Forestry's Burn Crew traveled to Sand Ridge Prairie near Peoria, Illinois to do a burn with the Illinois DNR on November 9, 2010.  With dry conditions, good weather, and good fire breaks the burn was a great success.  The burn was on an old field with remnants of native sand prairie and savanna.  The main goals for the fall burn were to discourage woody encroachment of the prairie and to promote native prairie species.  This was accomplished due to a hot fire and nearly continuous coverage.  Small cedars and pines that have encroached onto the prairie the past couple of years were killed while the small encroaching black oaks were top killed.  These trees will vigorously re-sprout and produce multiple sprout oak bushes, which is a desirable savanna feature.  The larger black oaks were not largely damaged by the fire, although fire scars will be evident on some trees, which is another desirable savanna feature.  Several brush piles, a result of previous clearing efforts, were also consumed by fire.
On the same day the crew burned a smaller native prairie with an important population of bird foot violet.  As a result of this burn, the first in many years, an impressive floral display is expected in 2011, along with a thicker and healthier re-growth of native prairie grasses.
