Timber Sales and Appraisals
The trees on your
land took 60 to 100 years to grow.
Get the right consultation before
selling it.
Harvesting timber can be
an important part of your lands
role in your management plan. When you hire Long Forestry to
oversee your timber sale, we will not
only properly mark the trees for sale,
but will also tally the volume and grade
and associate those factors with a
high/low/average stumpage value based on
current market trends. Then we will
market your trees to prospective timber
buyers who are licensed to buy timber in
Illinois. You will receive
multiple bids ensuring you will receive
maximum value for your timber.
Long Forestry
will prepare the bid letter, mail the
bid letters, and prepare a bullet-proof
timber sale contract.
Long
Forestry always recommends a sustainable
harvest. This means the return of
a healthy forest, regeneration of
seedlings, and wildlife habitat are top
priority. We want to promote
sustainable forestry to insure the
presence of natural environments for our
future generations. |

approved tree marking paint. |

Marking the stumps at the ground
provides a way to tally harvested trees
after the fact. |

The white oak in front is marked for
harvest, while the white oak in back is
not, even though they are similar trees.
A sustainable harvest requires that you
leave good trees behind to support
genetics, provide a seed crop, and food
for wildlife.
Harvesting
sustainably is critical to insure forest
land, wildlife, recreation, and future
harvests for the coming generations. |

Why you should hire a
professional forester to oversee
your timber sale |
| A
professional forester will write a
management plan for your land to insure
sustainable forest practices. |
| You have to
know what you are selling. Your
consulting forester will do an
inventory
for you, then measure and mark the trees
to be sold. |
| Your
forester will advertise your timber for
bids, so you get multiple bids and the
highest price. |
| Your
forester will oversee the harvest. |
Consulting
foresters can handle most of the sale
for you. For example...
- Contract
- Timber description
- Bid solicitations
- Harvest administration
- Contract compliance
|
| Your
forester will tell you which
post-harvest activities you will need
and develop a plan of
management activities for the next 10
years. |
- This may include timber stand
improvement, prescribed fire, tree
planting, invasive control, or other silvicultural activities.
|
|
Studies
show that timber sales administered by
professional foresters using competitive
bidding receive significantly higher
sales income and better protection of
the land for future harvests. |

|
Timber sales; Do's and Don'ts |
|
|
Hire a professional consulting forester |
|
|
Have a written and signed contract. |
|
|
Always provide post-harvest TSI,
invasive control, or other prescription |
|
|
Have a written management plan. |
|
|
Don't sell to unlicensed timber buyers.
They are not bonded. |
|
|
Don't sell unless everything is in
writing. |
|
Don't sell trees on a diameter limit.
- There are many factors to consider for
each tree other than size. |
|
Don't sell only the best trees.
- This downgrades the genetics and long
term productivity of your timber. |
|
|
Don't enter into a management agreement
giving a company the rights to your
timber. |
|
Don't include damaged trees caused by
logging activities.
- This could
lead to trees being "damaged" on
purpose. |
|
| Protect your land and its future. |
